Valparaiso to Buenos Aires cruise on Celebrity Infinity March 2008
Flights from Manchester to Samtiago via Heathrow and Madrid were very good.Arrived at Crown Pleza Hotel in Santiago before midday so plenty of time to explore central Santiago.Hotel excellent.
Coach to Valparaiso next day OK butcoach shuttle from Terminal along busy dock to ship was chaotic,Over 3/4hour to do under 1 mile due to traffic jams of lorries.Vehicle had no air conditioning and it was very hot,to say passengers in this vehicle were not happy would be an understatement.
The Cruise itinerary was excellent and we enjoyed good weather at all Ports of call,Coquimbo,La Serena, Puerto Montt, Punta arenas,Ushuaia,Puerto Madryn,Punta del Este, and Montivideo.[cooler at Punta Arenas and Ushuaia but otherwise hot]
We did not go on any organised trips but managed to see most of the sighs by using local taxis/minibus,including Volcanos,Penguins Sea lions etc etc. We also rode the prisoners railway at Ushuaia.
Unfortunately the weather was too rough to go round Cape Horn but we did get close enough to see the Albatross Statue and Chilean outpost and Flag etc.
Disembarkation was smooth at Buenos Aires and flights home with Iberia were good
However I must record that after cruising from L.A. to Ft Lauderdale via Panama Canal on Celebrity Summit a couple of years ago we were disapointed with some aspects of life on board Infinity, particularly the Oceanview Cafe.
Oceanview Cafe---- Hygiene when entering was appalling, wipes available but rarely staff to ensure their use, hense most people not bothering to use them.Tables not cleared of used crockery and leftovers, plenty of staff about but nobody organising them. Not enough saucers for cups, even when drinks brought by waiter, quite often just a cup with no saucer [like a transport cafe]
Trellis Restaurant---- The food and service was excellent but the dress code as stated in the brochure and the daily newsletter awas not adhered to i.e. tee shirt and jeans on a formal night
To sum up, A very good cruise but due to the above,Infinity could not be described as a 5 star ship
