My husband and I decided to celebrate our honeymoon onboard the Celebrity Constellation as we had read very good reviews about it. As first-time cruisers we had great expectations and little knowledge. We booked a Concierge Class room on the Sky deck (the highest deck with staterooms).

In summary our experience can be summarised with good and bad points as below.

Good:

1. The check-in process at the port was smooth as Concierge Class have priority check-in which consists of a separate check-in station
2. The room was nicely presented and clean and it was relatively easy to use the TV for room service, account summary and other services
3. The 24-hour complimentary room service and the breakfast delivery in the morning was a great luxury. We enjoyed breakfast in the room every day and really appreciated this service after having queued for breakfast at the buffet.
4. The itinerary was great and the ports of call very interesting. The only city we did not particularly like was Helsinki. We found that there was nothing to see there and not much to do.
5. There were different facilities that could be used for free and lots of food and drinks. There is a gym and acqua spa as well as a pool and jacuzzis.
6. Every night the bed was prepared for us and a chocolate was left on our pillows
7. The staff was generally friendly and greeted you with a smile
8. The desembarkation process was very smooth and efficient

Bad:

1. The communication prior to the cruise was not great and the booklet we received asked us to arrive not earlier than 2pm at the port. However, once onboard we found that there had been activities onboard since 11am and we lost out on the fun of the first day
2. Bar staff followed you in the venue to ask if you wanted a drink (for which you had to pay). This was quite off-putting if you just wanted to sit down and enjoy a show or just relax
3. The vegetarians are not very well catered for. Food labelling is not clear and staff used the same pans and utensil to cook meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. This was especially upsetting at the grill where hamburgers (meat and veggie) were cooked on the same grill. The in-stateroom menu has very few vegetarian choices. The restaurant where the evening meals are served has a vegetarian menu which is in effect a vegan and lacto menu with very limited choice. The standard menu normally had a vegetarian choice but it was not labelled. However, special arrangements could be made with the maitre and the chef at the beginning of the cruise
4. We did not particularly enjoy the evening entertainment and thought it was not up to the standard we expected. The shows were very much biased towards musicals and with little variety.
5. The shuttle bus was charged at $12 per person for unlimited use during the day. We thought that this charge was high and most of the ports were at easy walking distance to the centre.
6. The maps given onboard were really bad and would not have been sufficient to help find your way. We did however, have our own city maps which were very useful.

We cannot make any comparison with other cruise liners but we hope that our review will help you form an opinion on this cruise liner.
Quality of Food1
The food was good quality but the vegetarian choice and food preparation standard was not good.
Entertainment2
The magician and a couple of singers were really not enjoyable but some other shows were. The entertainment in lounges and bars was of mixed quality.
Shore Excursions3
We only took guided tours in St Petersburg given the Visa restrictions. The guides seem to be knowledgeble.
Staff4
Staff was generally friendly and greeted you with a smile.
Children's Facilitiesn/a
We did not use those
Onboard Activities1
The onboard activities were not very varied. Mainly they consisted fo Trivia, Bingo and similar. The most enjoyable activity for us was the ballroom classes which were only available on sea days for 1 hour.
Cabins5
We really liked our cabin and thought that the size and storage space was more than adequate
Overall Rating2

Regarding checkin, advising nearly 2000 passengers to arrive at Harwich at approx 2pm meant that the checkin area was similar to that of an airport... get in a queue to be moved on to the next queue. Like others have since discovered, checkin actually starts at 11am so why not stagger the arrival times ? Quality of food we found to be very good and ate in the main restaurant every night, opting to stay well away from the "canteen" style casual dining which was chaos. To be honest the entertainment was totally dire. We only looked in a couple of times and left on both occasions totally disillusioned, even embarrassed. Our main gripe was that being on a late dinner our entertainment was laid on at 7pm ! no thankyou...I like to eat and then go to the theatre as with Cunard. Can only assume this was organised to allow the entertainment staff to go to bed early and not for the passengers benefit !!! The staff we found excellent overall, especially Farrah our waitress and Raimond our steward. Went on very few shore excursions, found it more suitable to do our own thing apart from St Petersburg where both the tours and guides were very informative. Helsinki could be cut out of the trip as nothing there to excite. Our cabin was clean and comfortable and we were glad we chose to have a balcony, however, storage was an issue. Living in and departing form the UK means we can take as many cases as we like but even storing our 2 (albeit large) suitcases was a problem. Overall very enjoyable but would we cruise with Celebrity again ? not sure.... Maybe a bit too much sell, sell, sell and maybe they should pay their staff more than $50 per month so they don't have to rely on tips ! (approx $300 per cabin)

Cannot comment on your personal experience, but would answer one or two. 2pm embarkation is so that your cabin will be ready and for the previous occupants to leave the ship. However, some of the occupants will have remained on board to continue cruising and the entertainment arranged on the morning will have been for those people, not for the new cruisers. The drinks waiters ask if you would like drinks, the simple answer is no thank you. I have been on many cruises and never found them a nuisance. The shows on American ships are geared towards the Americans and therefore may not be what other nationalities will find particularly entertaining, but all the activities on board should mean that most people are catered for. As you discoverd, if you have a particular request regarding meals, the matre D will always ensure your need is catered for.
