Q:
We are cruising the Alaskan coast in Celebrity Mercury in July. We have a balcony, and read reports that you can clearly see whales around the ship. Do we, therefore, need to book a separate, whalewatching trip? Any other 'must do' suggestions? We are berthing at Sitka, Ketchikan and Skagway. Josey

When we did the Alaska cruise a few years ago we did not see one whale, so if you want to see them I would do a whale watching trip. Enjoy your cruise we did the scenery is fantastic

As usual A of N is right. There are never any guarantees as to whether you will see whales or orcas or dolphins. You may be extremely lucky and have them around you some of the time but your best bet is to go on an actual whale watching trip because the people running the trips are aware where the whales are most of the time and have the manoeuvrability to find them. There are no guarantees though .. Regards ... Nei

Whales are wild creatures. They may be visible, they may not. They have a whole ocean to play in
