Q:
Ive booked a cruise for next February and it will be my first time with Cel.Cruises.from the brochure it looked very smart and classy but having just watched 'Return to Cruising' shown 10 years ago re Janet Macdonalds rise to fame...th ship looked tacky and classless...Ive always cruised with P&O and never been disappointed 7 times on board various ships. The are of such high standard..luxurious yet with style taste and class...Ive heard the american ships are brash glitzy and loud...yet C.C's brochure looked beautiful and claims its been voted 4th top cruise line. I was going to book another cruise which was a special offer with CC to the Baltic on the Constellation but having seen this programme have been put off..especially as I had to persuade my sister and being its her first time I certainly dont want her first experience to be ruined....Id rather not take the risk and book with P&O..apparently the americans on board dont even bother to 'dress' for dinner..but stay in their track suits and shorts! can anyone tell me their experience of this cruise line please? thank you

Have just returned from a med cruise on the galaxy this month and it was wonderful. Food, service and the ship could not be faulted. Galaxy was refurbished in the Spring, if you look within this forum I am sure there are a lot of posts re her refurb and what was carried out. Service was second to none, this was our second time cruising with X and we are looking into the Summit for next year. Certainly no issues evident on our cruise re adhearing to dress code, formal nights were certainly formal dress! Smart casual and above evenings mainly adheared to within main dining area.

The Galaxy has already been refurbished twice since her launch date - we too watched the Return to The Cruise programme and yes we are sailing on the Galaxy in 40 days time - think cruising is very different to how it was 10 years ago and things are a bit more sophisticated. Not been on Celebrity cruises as yet but did cruise with theor parent company RCCL last November and we were very plesantly surprised so here's hoping we both have a good experience!

I have just returned from a 14 night Baltic cruise on Celebrity Constellation with my wife and two teenage sons. This was my first cruise and overall we found it to be a fantastic experience. It is obviously an American ship but in no way glitzy (we would hate it if it was) but it excels in so many ways. The cabin we had was excellent, the cleanliness outstanding and particularly impressive was the fact that the ship never felt crowded (I couldn't believe there were nearly 2000 passengers and 1000 crew) and also the speed of embarkation/disembarkation - when we visited ports we were straight on and straight off. Food was very good and the ambience in the restaurants was excellent. I can assure you that the dress code was pretty much adhered to. We would definitely book again - my boys said it was the best holiday ever by miles and they loved the ship.

thank you so much for your most informative answer to my question re trip to the Baltics in the Constellation and has certainly given my sister and I sufficient incentive to go ahead and book, which we have now done for next July! There is just one other question if I may ask.. in St Petersburg we have decided not to go on the excursions but to 'go alone' and understand need visas for this. However, the tour operator warned that it is dangerous to walk the streets on your own...this very much surprised both me and my sister...one assumed it was a safe region..having experience P&O excursions in the past which are always very expensive,I have in the past done, as many other seasoned cruisers do, go it alone/share a taxi - less expensive that way...
what if anything did you experience 'bad' about St.Petersburgh..is it not safe??

Hi, glad you've decided to book, you'll have a great time. We decided to book the Celebrity tours for St Petersburg simply because we were looking at paying about £340 for 4 visas. I agree the tours are expensive but we found it easier for St P only. It's difficult to say whether or not the place is dangerous. It didn't look overly dangerous to me; however, the one down side was the fact that the port is a fair way from the city and, apparently, it's a bit hit and miss with taxis. The officials are fairly severe at the port too. That said, once in the city it seemed ok and, I must admit, I quite fancied wandering off but was unable to do so. I think it's like any other big city to be honest - if you go to the rough areas or down empty streets at night then you run a risk. If you go and see the sights in the main part of the city I suspect it's fine. We were warned of pickpockets etc. but, again, it's the same if you go to Paris, Florence, New York. The plus side with the tours was that the evening one to St Catherine's Palace was really, really good and it's definitely somewhere I would recommend visiting. Other than that if you can sort your taxi out at the port, go for it - the city is stunning.

Hello
I was wondering how old your teenagers were? We will be travelling on Contellation in July 09 with our 2 boys 16 & 15, and were wondering how many others would probably be on board. Were they entertained on board. We have done Princess and RCI and they cater well for kids. Any comments?

a QUESTION by jones (19 Aug 08 17:21)
Hi - my sons are 14 and a half and almost 16 so about the same as yours. There were 120 children on board of all ages but they found about 30 or so in their age range. Both found a different set of friends for the duration of the cruise. Celebrity ran a programme of events from 9:00 am to 1:00 am (!) for 15-17 year olds and both my sons were very complimentary about the whole experience. There is a separate area for teenagers called "The Tower" on deck 11 (near the night club area) and this was a regular haunt. My two are quite hard to please which was why we chose a cruise this year but they both want to go back next year and would want to go back with Celebrity. Hope this helps.

Many people were put of cruising after the first showing of “The Cruise” which featured Galaxy. In truth if you switch from P & O to Celebrity you will immediately notice the difference in so many ways. I was on Galaxy last October and loved every minute and we went through one of the worst storms that year when a Tanker in the same waters went down. She is well skippered with excellent activities and entertainment staff, cleaned and tidied like no other, not too large, the food is terrific and the atmosphere on board is wonderful. Just don’t give your scepticism another thought and go for it... Neil

Hi there we went on a med cruise aboard `Century` (sister to Galaxy)and are going again in Dec Tranatlantic. the Century has been fully refurbished though I understand Galaxy has not been up to now. However let me assure you that Celebrity cruises are certainly 5 star The century class ships ie Galaxy/Century and Mercury are on a slightly smaller scale than their newer ships ie Constellation/Millennium/Summit and Infinity these ships are even more beautiful, we have also been on the `Constellation` in a word wonderful. Please dont think for one moment that they are glitzy in any way, it could`nt be further from the truth, they now have 2 newer ships seting sail on their maiden voyages at the end of this year they are the Solstice class ships. Believe me Celebrity are worthy of their award winning status. Perhapes it may be better for you to try and change your booking to be able to travel on their new ships, the Solstice will be magic, we are going to try and go to celebrate my 70th b`day next year.
Now it might sound to you as though I am being paid for this reveiw,no it`s just the truth, as for the Americans they are `Americans` a bit loud but very friendly, regards dressing for dinner it is the English who are the let down there, the americans in their white tux look amazing, you should go with an open mind, you wont regret it. Please check if you can when the Galaxy is due her refurb. And remember Celebrity really is a 5 star fleet and P/O 4 star.
Please feel free to ask me anything else if I can answer it I will In conclusion what you see in the brochure is what you get. I wish you a happy holiday. Kathleen PS book that Constellation cruise, like I said that ship is even better, but befor that please look at the Solstice.
